This research positions 'teaching as a designing work' and aims to conceptualize, design, and evaluate a scaffolding model that supports PSSTs in applying Design Thinking (DT) to address authentic teaching-learning problems through the creation of pedagogical designs in the form of physical models and associated instructional activities.
A scaffolding framework for Design Thinking (DT) of PSSTs is proposed that integrates two supports within the DT process: video-based noticing as a pedagogical scaffold (i.e., engaging PSSTs in attending to, interpreting, and making decisions based on classroom video to support empathy and problem framing) for the Empathize and Define phases, and expert modeling as a design scaffold (i.e., observing experts’ processes of designing, pedagogical reasonings to guide their design ideas and features) for the Ideate and Prototype phases.
Expected outcomes of this research include a research-informed Scaffolding Framework for Pedagogical Design Thinking for PSTs, empirical insights into novice-expert design differences, and evidence-based strategies to foster empathy, problem-framing, and creative learning design among PSSTs. These contributions aim to inform both theory and practice by reconceptualizing teacher noticing as a scaffold for design and a DT model tailored for pre-service teacher education.
